Psychological effects of Missing Teeth

As you may know, missing teeth can have a profound emotional effect on your life. Your teeth not only help you eat and speak, but your smile also has an enormous impact on how we connect with those around us.

There are various reasons for missing teeth: accidents, medical conditions, medications, hygiene, and more. Many of our clients have described feelings of guilt, worry, or even fear due to the social stigmas surrounding their tooth loss, which have an effect not just on your

ability to eat but also on how you interact with others.

Appearance, Speech & Self Confidence

Common Stigmas

  •  You don’t take care of your oral health

  •  You don’t care how you look

  •  You cannot afford dental treatments

These stigmas can be a detriment to your self-confidence and cause a lot of anxiety. Our Denturists often hear that clients avoid social gatherings that include food because they are not able to chew or they are embarrassed by their smile. A person’s lack of teeth does not indicate that they do not care about their oral health, or their looks, or reflect one's income level.

A lack of teeth or an improperly fitted denture can cause you to look older and lack facial support. This happens because as the bone in your mouth resorbs the vertical dimension- the space between your nose and shin- continues to decrease. As your lips continue to flatten, tiny vertical wrinkles and folds start to appear. This hastens the process of aging. With properly fitting dentures, your lips and cheeks will have the support they need to appear fuller. Your Denturist in Beausejour will be able to design your denture to address these issues.

Speaking may be more challenging if teeth are missing. Why? Because your lips, teeth, and tongue must be in the appropriate positions to enunciate and produce words. A tongue-to-teeth contact is required to properly pronounce most words.

Health Consequences

Your health and eating habits may be impacted by missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures. Poor chewing ability may lead to a less varied diet or eating less food altogether resulting in nutritional deficiencies, digestive issues not to mention, depression & other psychological effects. Often people take an “I’ll live with it” approach but you don't have to!
