How to clean Dentures

Many people often wonder how to clean their Dentures properly. How well you take care of your oral health will determine how long your denture will last and how confident you feel when you smile. It is crucial to establish a straightforward maintenance schedule that includes both yearly checkups with your Denturist at Daien Denture Clinic and professional denture

cleanings.

Dentures, like real teeth, develop plaque, stains, and the potential to harbour bacteria between the gumline and the porous acrylic denture material (complete or partial dentures). This may exacerbate existing cavities on natural teeth, sores from dentures, and other oral health problems.

Suggested Supplies:

  • Clean towel

  • Soft ordinary toothbrush

  • Renew Denture Cleaner

  • A denture bath or case

  • A toothbrush for dentures.

Cleaning instructions: We suggest using a mix of brushing and soaking to clean your denture(s). When brushing, put a fresh towel in the sink or on the counter (in case you drop your denture). Use warm water (not hot, as this could warp your denture!) and a denture brush to gently remove any food debris from all denture surfaces. Brush your gums, palate, and tongue softly with toothpaste using a toothbrush with soft bristles.

A professional strength cleaner, such as Renew Denture Cleaner, should be used to soak your dentures (see instructions on bottle for further instructions). Dentures do not have to be worn at night. When not being worn, store your dentures in a denture case or sealed container filled with room-temperature water. Remember to rinse any cleanser off your

dentures before wearing them, if you do so right after cleaning them.

DO NOT

  • Clean your dentures in boiling water. It may warp them.

  • Do not use toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch your dentures acrylic increasing the chance of bacteria formation.

  • Use cleaning supplies, such as bleach. Not only will this cause discoloration of the acrylic but is also highly indigestible.

Remember to brush and soak your denture after every meal to prevent plaque, bacteria, and odours. We recommend annual visits to our Denturists at Daien Denture Clinic to have your dentures professionally cleaned and polished. This will lessen the likelihood of bacteria and plaque adhering.
